Holland America Cruises complaint by Alepore
My family and I were considering several vacation options and one of them was an Alaskan Cruise. I saw that Holland America offered one that would fit into our schedule and called to get a courtesy hold placed on the cruise. The agent told me that I needed to place a deposit in order to hold the cruise, which I thought was fine. She also asked if I would be purchasing the travel insurance and I said yes. When I asked about the cancellation policy, she said as long as I cancelled prior to May 9, I would receive a full refund. Well, when we decided to pursue a different vacation, I called Holland America on April 28 to cancel and was told I would receive my deposit less the insurance premium of $237. Since I was cancelling well within the penalty period, I said there was no cruise to insure but they said it was still non refundable. Since they make you pay for the insurance even if you are just holding the cruise its like they are penalizing you for not following through with the booking. I've been on 17 cruises and have never encountered such an unfair practice. I believe it is a ripoff and would discourage people from patronizing this cruise line.
